Al Sergel III

Conductor

Al has been teaching music for over 50 years and taught at every level during his career. He directed very successful band programs in Auburndale, Florida and Ft. Worth, Texas. In 1981, he accepted the position as the Director of Bands at Northwest Missouri State University and remained there until he retired from full time teaching in 2004. From 2007 to 2014 he organized and conducted the Platte City Community Band in Platte City, MO.

He has over 50 percussion solos and ensembles published with JPM Music and many appear on state required music lists. In retirement, Al established Sergel3Music to publish his band compositions and educational materials. His latest work, “March for Unsung Heroes’’ was premiered in May 2021 by the NCCB.

Al is a recipient of ΚΚΨ Distinguished Service to Music Medal, ΦΜA Orpheus Award, ΣΑΙ Distinguished Member, Florida State Band Alumni “Wall of Fame” Inductee and 2013 NWMSU Outstanding Faculty Emeritus Award. He serves as the manager for the Missouri High School Activities Association State Level Solo & Ensemble Festival; and he remains active as a conductor, clinician and composer. He enjoys the wonderful Florida weather and being outdoors while fishing, kayaking, biking and walking.

He has been a member of the NCCB percussion section since 2018. Al is honored to be asked to serve as our conductor, and says he is excited to work with this fine group of musicians and colleagues.
